The fabric decisions for an outdoor summer event are more consequential than for an indoor occasion, for one simple reason: you have no air conditioning to fall back on.

Prioritise breathability above all. Linen, lightweight cotton, viscose — the same fabrics that work best for summer dressing in general — are the right choices for outdoor summer events. Standing in the sun for extended periods makes fabric breathability more important than in almost any other summer situation.
Choose fabrics that do not show perspiration visibly. Light grey is notoriously bad for this; white, cream, navy, and most solid prints manage it better. Textured fabrics — linen, seersucker, cotton with a slight texture — show less than smooth, flat-weave cottons.
Consider the hem and the grass. A floor-length maxi dress at a garden party will trail on the grass. For outdoor events specifically, midi length — mid-calf at the longest — is more practical. A well-cut midi in a beautiful fabric reads as more intentional than a maxi that has accumulated grass stains by the second hour.
