How to choose the right fabric and accessories.

Go for the light or medium denim fabrics

In stores, you can find denim fabrics not only in a variety of shades, but also in completely different compositions and densities. It is important not to overdo it with the density of the fabric, because a personal sewing machine may simply not work with its thick seams. Ideal fabrics for sewing at home are those with a density of 130 to 300g / m2.

Can’t find denim? Feel free to use regular cotton fabrics.

Denim is a cotton fabric with a special weave. What we need is not the fancy name of a fabric, but its composition, texture and density.

With or without elastane?

In our experience, the addition of at least a small amount of elastane provides stretch and elasticity, which makes jeans more comfortable to wear and provides a better fit.

For sewing trousers, skirts and sundresses, we definitely recommend fabric with elastane, but for sewing a trench coat or denim jacket, this is not that crucial, and 100% cotton composition will be just right.

Which needles to choose.

For sewing, it is better to use dense fabrics needles – No. 90 and No. 100.

Which fittings to choose.

We chose metal zippers and metal snap buttons, they fit perfectly with the denim style.

IMPORTANT!

Make sure to wash the fabrics before sewing at a temperature of at least 40℃. Cotton fabric often shrink strongly.

Ideas for decorating denim clothes.

Decorative braid

Your failproof way for decorating your jeans. We have used metallic braid on a mesh base (this braid is ideal for sewing into seams yet keeping them flexible).

You can also use fabric fringe, braid with feathers, braid in the form of a chain, etc.

The best area for decorating with braid is the seams from the yoke of the front and back of a jacket or shirt

Raw cut with fringe effect

While for all other fabrics it is necessary to hide all cut edges (bottom of trousers, bottom of skirt, bottom of dress, bottom of sleeves), when working with denim we can set our imagination free. Raw cuts on denim clothes makes them look modern and relaxed.

Important: make sure the cut looks aesthetically pleasing. To get this, arm yourself with a thick needle and scissors, and carefully separate the horizontal denim threads from the base so that the cut is turned into a small fringe.

Contrast stitching

A denim seam is not only made for endurance, but it also serves as an additional decorative element. Also using contrasting threads, you can add an interesting accent to the product.

We used beige threads on blue jeans, and red brown on white jeans. Today fashion allows to do stitching even in such bright colors as red and light green.

It is better to choose reinforced threads for topstitching (polyester). If you don’t have them at hand, thread together 2 threads from the spools that you use for sewing into one needle.
