Everyday trousers with an elastic fit

These children's pants have an elastic waistband and cuffs. They feature pockets on the front in the side seams, with asymmetrical cutouts above the knees.

Reflective piping is added at knee level on the back pieces, and the waist is enhanced with an adjustable elastic band. Sized from 4 to 8 years (104–128 cm height).

Step by step

Sewing instructions

Softshell fabric should be ironed carefully. It is recommended to use a Teflon attachment on the iron or to iron with steam at a low temperature.

Pocket

  1. 1

    Fold the pocket bag and front top together, aligning the notches. Mark a 1 cm (3/8") seam allowance along the notches. Stitch along the marked line.

  2. 2

    Clip the seam allowance at the corners, turn the pocket to the right side and press, shaping the pocket entrance. Stitch the allowances onto the pocket bag.

  3. 3

    Fold the pocket bags right sides together, aligning the notches, and stitch. Trim and press the allowances.

Front panels

    Mark the seam lines on the front bottom piece underside. Stitch and press the dart upwards.

  2. 5

    Fold the front top and bottom pieces right sides together and stitch. Trim the allowances and press upwards.

  3. 6

    Topstitch along the dart seam 0.1 cm (1/16") from the edge.

Back panels

  1. 7

    Fold the back top and bottom pieces right sides together, inserting the reflective piping between the pieces. Stitch, trim the allowances, and press upwards.

  2. 8

    Topstitch along the dart seam 0.1 cm (1/16") from the edge.

Assembly

    Stitch the front seat seam, trim the allowances, and press to the side.

  2. 10

    Stitch the back seat seam, trim the allowances, and press to the side.

  3. 11

    Fold the front and back pieces of the pants right sides together, matching the notches at the inseam. Stitch, trim the allowance and press to the back panels.

  4. 12

    Stitch the side seams, matching the notches. Stitch, trim the allowances and press to the back pieces.

  5. 13

    Stitch the cuff elastic band into a loop, attach it to the wrong side of the pant cuffs.

  6. 14

    Stitch on the overlock pulling the elastic band gently.

  7. 15

    Fold the bottom to the width of the elastic band and topstitch close to the edge of the elastic band.

Waistband

  1. 16

    Set eyelets according to the markings on the pattern pieces.

  2. 17

    Stitch the waistband elastic band into a loop, notch on the inside of the waistband.

  3. 18

    Stitch on the overlock pulling the elastic band gently.

  4. 19

    Thread the hat elastic through the eyelets and distribute it around the waistband.

  5. 20

    Topstitch along the seam allowance edge. Attach the cord lock and aglets to the elastic band.

  6. 21

    Press the finished garment well.

The trousers are ready!
