Sporty leggings with a striped edge

These leggings are cut close and stretchy, with a contrast stripe running down the side of each leg and a soft elastic waistband for all-day comfort. An optional stirrup strap loops under the foot for a snug, stay-put fit during play.

Sized from 3 to 10 years (98–140 cm height).

What you'll need

Suggested fabrics

This pattern is made for elastic fabrics — light-weight cotton lycra jersey or biflex fabric work best, giving the leggings enough stretch and recovery to move with an active child.

For the side stripes, choose a contrasting fabric. Optionally, dress the stripes up further with a decorative strap.

Also needed

  • Elastic – for the waistband, length noted on the pattern pieces
  • Contrast fabric – for the side stripes
  • Decorative strap (optional) – to trim the side stripes
  • Threads to match the fabric

When buying fabric, keep in mind that the material can shrink, so take a margin of 5–10%. You'll also need elastic for the waistband — its length is indicated on the pattern pieces.

Sewing instructions

Description of tailoring

19 steps
  1. 1

Lay the front, back details and stripe on the table as they should be sewn.

  2. 2

Pin the front pant detail to the stripe, right sides together.

  3. 3

Then pin the back pant detail to the other side of the stripe, right sides together.

  4. 4

Serge it. Press the seam allowances to the front and back details.

  5. 5

Mark the folding line — 2 cm from the edge. Fold and press.

  6. 6

Sew the folded allowance in place, using any stretching seam or a twin needle.

  7. 7

Cut off the excess allowance and press it.

  8. 8

Mark the placement for the decorative strap. Its length equals the length of the leg plus the length of the strap that goes over the foot.

  9. 9

Pin the decorative strap along the marked line. Sew in place. Press it.

  10. 10

Fold the pants in half and pin along the inseam, right sides together. Serge it. Press the seam allowances to the back.

  11. 11

Turn one pant leg right side out and insert it into the other, right sides together. Pin along the crotch, aligning the notches. Serge it.

  12. 12

Fold the elastic in half and stitch it into a ring.

  13. 13

Fold the waistband in half and stitch its short edges.

  14. 14

Divide the elastic and the waistband into 4 equal parts. Leave marks.

  15. 15

Fold the waistband in half, wrong sides together, and press it.

  16. 16

Insert the elastic into the waistband, basting if needed. Pin the waistband to the upper edge of the leggings, right sides together, matching the marks.

  17. 17

Serge in place. Press the seam allowances toward the leggings.

  18. 18

Measure the foot strap, pin it, and stitch several times to fix it in place.
