Jersey joggers with a quilted waistband

The legs are joined along the outseam and inseam and then the crotch, with slanted pockets set into the front panels and knit cuffs gathered onto the hems.

The waistband is made double, quilted with lines 2 cm apart, and takes both an elastic band and a drawstring through eyelets. Its inner half can be cut from a lining fabric to cut down bulk when the main fabric is thick.

Sewing instructions

28 steps in five stages, from the cuffs to the finished waistband.

Cuffs

3 steps
  1. 1

Fold the cuff in half with the right sides together and pin its short side edges. Stitch it.

  2. 2

Press the seam allowances open. Clip the triangles in the middle of the cuff. Fold in half and clip the seam allowances.

  3. 3

Fold the cuff in half with the wrong sides together and press it.

Waistband

7 steps
  1. 1

Choose to cut the waistband from the main fabric, or, as shown, to cut one half from the main fabric and the other half from the lining. That helps reduce bulk if your main fabric is too thick.

  2. 2

    Cut out the details.

  3. 3

Pin the short edges of the waistband with the right sides together. Stitch it. Leave a turning-out gap in the lining waistband. Press the seam allowances open.

  4. 4

Pin the waistband details together with the right sides and stitch the upper edge.

  5. 5

Understitch the seam allowances to the lining.

  6. 6

Press it. Fold the waistband in half and press once again.

  7. 7

Chalk the stitching lines according to the pattern, 2 cm (0.79″) apart. Stitch along the lines, stretching the waistband a little. Press it.

Pockets

11 steps
  1. 1

Pin the pocket detail to the front pant panel, aligning the notches.

  2. 2

Mark the pocket opening. Chalk the line at 7 mm (0.27″) from the side edge.

  3. 3

    Stitch along the lines.

  4. 4

Trim the seam allowance of the front pant.

  5. 5

    Cut diagonally to the seam.

  6. 6

Turn to the wrong side and press it.

  7. 7

Pin the pocket in place, or baste it along the pocket opening.

  8. 8

Topstitch the pocket opening at 3 mm (0.12″). Press it.

  9. 9

Pin the second pocket detail to the sewn pocket, aligning the notches, right sides together. Serge the details.

  10. 10

Stitch bar tacks at the ends of the pocket opening, 5 mm from the edge.

  11. 11

    The pockets are ready.

Assembly

4 steps
  1. 1

Pin the front and back pant panels along the outseam with the right sides together. Align the notches. Serge it. Press.

  2. 2

Pin the front and back pant panels along the inseam with the right sides together. Serge it. Press.

  3. 3

Insert one leg into the other. Pin the pant along the crotch with the right sides together. Serge it.

  4. 4

Divide the cuffs and the bottom hem of the leg into 4 equal parts. Pin the cuff into the bottom hem of the pants with the right sides together. Serge in and press.

Finishing the waistband

3 steps
  1. 1

Pin the waistband into the upper hem of the pants, right sides together. Serge in. Press it.

  2. 2

Insert the elastic through the gap. Stitch the ends of the elastic together.

  3. 3

    Iron the garment.
