A no-knot school tie

This tie consists of a main piece and a tail, adjustable in length along the neckline with an elastic keeper loop, buckle, and adjuster — so it goes on and off like a pullover, with no knot-tying needed.

One adjustable size, worn like a classic pre-tied school tie.

Step by step

Sewing instructions

Main tie

4 steps
  1. 1

Place the two main tie pieces (1) right sides together and stitch along the bottom edge. Cut out and turn the right side out and press.

  2. 2

Overlock the side edges of these pieces.

  3. 3

Sew the middle seam of the main piece of the tie, press the allowances. Turn to the right side.

  4. 4

Press the main piece of the tie so that the seam is located in the middle.

Tail

4 steps
  1. 1

Stitch the upper and lower allowances on the tail piece (2), placing the piece right sides inside. Press the allowances and turn them to the right side.

  2. 2

After turning, press the piece so that the seam is located in the center.

  3. 3

Overlock the side seam allowances of the tail, hide the end of the overlock stitch on the wrong side.

  4. 4

Place the tail with the right side inward and stitch the side allowances. Press flat and turn right side out.

Keeper loop

7 steps
  1. 1

Cut off 6 cm (2 ⅜″) from the elastic band. Thread the smaller part from the buckle through it and stitch the allowance.

  2. 2

Thread the adjuster and the second part of the buckle through the other side of the elastic. The elastic is 17 cm (6 ¾″) long.

  3. 3

Pass the end of the elastic through the adjuster, where the buckle is, and stitch the allowance. Stitch close to the adjuster.

  4. 4

Connect the two parts of the buckle.

  5. 5

Press the tie keeper piece (3) in half, then press the longitudinal allowances to the wrong side.

  6. 6

Fold the keeper in the center with the right side facing inward and sew the short edges, simultaneously inserting the raw edges of the elastic into them.

  7. 7

Turn the right side out and stitch along the pressed sides of the keeper loop. Press.

Assembling

5 steps
  1. 1

Mark the middle of the keeper loop on the right side. Place the middle seam of the tail to the mark and stitch it to the keeper with two stitches: along the upper and lower edges of the keeper.

  2. 2

Overlock the top seam allowance of the main tie piece.

  3. 3

Place the main part piece right sides together inside the tail by 1 cm (⅜″) and stitch.

  4. 4

Thread the main part through the tail so that the allowances are located inside the tail.

  5. 5

    Press the tie slightly.

The tie is ready!
