A relaxed tee, two ways to wear it

A relaxed T-shirt with a ribbed round neckband, sewn with either short or long sleeves — both sleeve patterns are included in one file.

Cut from soft, low-elastane jersey or interlock, this pattern is sized 18 months to 10 years.

What you'll need

Suggested fabrics

For sewing a T-shirt, choose fabric with a low content of elastane: soft jersey knit or interlock.

Also needed

  • Main fabric — 45–60 cm (17.7"–23.6"), length by size, see table below
  • Neckband fabric — width 3–6 cm (1.2"–2.4"), from the main fabric or a contrast
  • Threads
  • Seam allowances of 0.7 cm (0.27") are already included on every pattern piece

Use a jersey or stretch needle. If you don't have a serger, use zigzag or another stretch stitch, and finish the hem with a double needle.

Sewing instructions

Cutting & shoulders

3 steps
  1. 1

Lay out all the pattern pieces and pin them to the fabric. Cut out the fabric along the pattern's edge.

  2. 2

Pin the front and back together with right sides together along the shoulder edge. Sew with a serger. Press the allowances to the back.

  3. 3

Pin the sleeve into the open armhole, aligning the notches, right sides together.

Neckband

7 steps
  1. 1

Divide the neckband and the neckline into 4 equal sections.

  2. 2

Cut out the neckband from the main fabric if needed. The width of the neckband is 3–6 cm (1.2"–2.4"); the length of the neckband equals the length of the neckline × 0.75.

  3. 3

Fold the neckband in half with right sides together, pin, and stitch along the short edge. Fold the neckband in half again with wrong sides together and press. Divide the neckband into 4 equal sections.

  4. 4

Pin the neckband to the neckline, matching the notches.

  5. 5

Sew in place using a serger. While sewing, stretch the neckband a bit.

  6. 6

    Press the allowances.

  7. 7

Topstitch the neckline, fixing the allowances. Press.

Finishing

1 step
  1. 1

Fold the hem of the sleeves and the bottom of the T-shirt. Stitch with a double needle. Press.

T-shirt is ready!
