A simple knit T-shirt with flutter sleeves

This T-shirt is sewn from a single main fabric: front and back joined at the shoulders and sides, a neckline finished with a folded neckband, and short flutter sleeves gathered along their straight edge and set into an open armhole.

Only four pattern pieces are involved, and the whole garment can be assembled on a serger — or on a regular sewing machine with a stretch stitch. It is a good project for a first knit make.

Step by step

Sewing instructions

Nine steps, from the shoulder seams to the finished hem.

  1. 1

Pin the front and back pieces along the shoulder edges, right sides together. Serge, or stitch on the sewing machine using a zigzag stitch. Press the seam allowances towards the back.

  2. 2

Fold the neckband in half right sides together and pin its short edges. Serge it. Press the seam allowances. Fold the neckband in half along the long edge, wrong sides together, and press.

  3. 3

Pin the neckband to the neckline right sides together, aligning the notches: divide the neckband and the neckline into 4 equal parts (fold in half, make 2 marks, then align those 2 marks and make 2 more). Serge in, stretching the neckband a little.

  4. 4

Make a rolled hem on the serger along the rounded edge of the sleeve.

  5. 5

Make 2 parallel stitches on the sleeve along the straight edge (stitch length 4–5, tension 2).

  6. 6

Make the gathering. You can find the required length on the sleeve sewing pattern.

  7. 7

Pin the sleeve into the open armhole right sides together, aligning the notches. Serge in. Press the seam allowances towards the garment.

  8. 8

Pin the front and back pieces along the side edges, right sides together. Serge. Press the seam allowances towards the back.

  9. 9

Fold the bottom hem of the garment up by 1.5 cm (0.59″) and pin it. Stitch on the sewing machine using a zigzag or twin needle. Press.

The T-shirt is ready!
