A quilted vest built for layering

This slightly elongated quilted vest features a zip front, a stand collar, and patch pockets. It's fully lined and insulated for extra warmth.

Sized from 18 months to 10 years (86–140 cm height).

What you'll need

Suggested fabrics

For the main fabric, we recommend a raincoat fabric such as Dewspo.

For the insulation, use synthetic materials like Alpolux or Isosoft, 100/150 grams. Fleece or Velboa faux fur work well for the lining.

Sewing instructions

Back preparation

4 steps
  1. 1

    Place the back piece on the insulation, pin them together and stitch at 0.5 cm (3/16") from the edge.

  2. 2

    Cut off the excess insulation.

  3. 3

    Mark the stitch lines using a ruler and chalk.

  4. 4

    Sew using the marked lines as guidance on the back.

Front preparation

  1. 5

    Place the front part on the insulation, pin them together and stitch at 0.5 cm (3/16") from the edge.

  2. 6

    Cut off the excess insulation.

  3. 7

    Mark the stitch lines using a ruler and chalk.

  4. 8

    Sew using the marked lines as guidance on the front.

Pocket

  1. 9

    Interface the entrance to the pocket, extending 0.5 cm (3/16") beyond the bend.

  2. 10

    Press the top allowance of the pocket by 1 cm (3/8") and by 2.5 cm (3 15/16"), bending it to the wrong side.

  3. 11

    Stitch the corners of the top of the pocket and the lining, stopping at 1 cm (3/8") from the edge.

  4. 12

    Turn the top cut of the pocket onto the right side and stitch it at 0.5 cm (3/16") from the edge.

  5. 13

    Pin the pocket with the lining right sides together and overstitch it at 1 cm (3/8") at the previously sewn corners, backstitch and move to the other side.

  6. 14

    Cut out the allowances, turn the pocket inside out and press it, making a 0.1 cm (1/16") edging to the wrong side.

  7. 15

    Transfer the points for sewing the pocket from the patterns and make markings.

  8. 16

    Pin the pockets to the front details and stitch at 0.1 cm (1/16") from the edge, keeping the needle down at the corners of the pocket and turning it 90 degrees to the other side.

Vest assembling

    Place the front and back pieces right sides together and pin the shoulder and side seams together, matching the quilting. Stitch.

  2. 18

    Carefully press the seams.

  3. 19

    Place the collar piece on the insulation, pin together and stitch at 0.5 cm (3/16") from the edge.

  4. 20

    Cut off the excess insulation.

  5. 21

    Place the neck and collar right sides together, pin and sew the collar to the neck.

  6. 22

    Press the collar, cutting the allowances at the curves of the neckline.

  7. 23

    Place the part of the windproof strip on the insulation, pin it together and stitch it at 0.5 cm (3/16") from the edge.

  8. 24

    Cut off the excess insulation.

  9. 25

    Pin the top and bottom plackets right sides together and overstitch to 0.7 cm (1/4").

  10. 26

    Cut the excess along the curves and in the corner. Flip it onto the right side and press it.

  11. 27

    Topstitch along the placket and secure it at the edge by 0.5 cm (3/16").

Zipper

  1. 28

    Steam the zipper first.

  2. 29

    Sew the left side of the zipper with the front side to the placket up to the notch, turning the top of the zipper at an angle and bending the placket along the notch onto the right side.

  3. 30

    Sew the zipper placket to the front, leaving 1 cm (3/8") at the top and bottom for stitching.

  4. 31

    Fasten the zipper and move the points to the right side to align the stitch and collar.

  5. 32

    Pin the zipper to the second front, aligning the reference marks and stitch.

  6. 33

    Press the zipper.

Lining

  1. 34

    Pin the side and shoulder cuts of the lining.

  2. 35

    Stitch, leaving an unstitched opening in the left side seam.

  3. 36

    Press the shoulder and side seams onto the back.

  4. 37

    Press the loop at 0.3 cm (1/8") from the edge and fold it in half.

  5. 38

    Topstitch at 0.1 cm (1/16").

  6. 39

    Mark 2.5 cm (3 15/16") from the center of the back in both directions and stitch at 0.8 cm (5/16") to the back.

    Pin the collar to the neck of the lining and stitch it.

    Press the collar seams.

    Sew the bottom of the lining to the vest by 0.7 cm (1/4") and topstitch along the lining by 0.1 cm (1/16").

    Sew the lining collar to the vest and topstitch along the lining by 0.1 cm (1/16").

    Sew the lining to the zipper, pressing it down slightly.

  12. 45

    Cut out the corners at the top and bottom.

    Through the armhole, topstitch along the lining near the zipper.

    Fold the collar allowances of the lining and the vest and stitch them together as close to the seam as possible, aligning the control marks.

    Place the armhole and the lining right sides together. Sew in circles.

    Cut along the curve and cut out the seams.

Finishing

    Turn the vest onto the right side.

    Through the hole in the lining, topstitch at 0.1 cm (1/16") along the armhole lining.

    Sew the side seam near the armhole and hem.

    Sew up the unstitched opening on the edge.

    Press the armhole and the top of the stand.

  6. 55

    Topstitch at 0.7 cm (1/4") along the armhole, along the bottom, moving to the zipper and the stand in a circle.

  7. 56

    Give the vest a final press.
